This role will play a key part in ensuring the reliability, performance, and continuous improvement of operationally critical manufacturing equipment, supporting the delivery of site production targets within a GMP-regulated environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance and respond to equipment breakdowns, ensuring manufacturing equipment is operating safely, efficiently, and with minimal downtime.
  • Utilise the site's maintenance management system to complete work orders, maintain accurate engineering records, manage spare parts requirements, and support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support engineering projects including equipment installation, commissioning, validation activities, and technical improvements, while ensuring compliance with GMP, health and safety, and quality requirements.

Requirements

  • NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in an Engineering discipline, with previous experience in a pharmaceutical, life sciences, FMCG, or other regulated manufacturing environment.
  • Strong mechanical and/or electrical fault-finding experience, with the ability to diagnose, repair, and maintain manufacturing equipment.
  • Working knowledge of GMP requirements, Permit to Work systems, and engineering best practices within a regulated environment.

The role will be based at our Innovation Centre in Bedford, UK with option for hybrid working.

The Senior Quality Engineer s focus is to drive quality improvements through meticulous quality planning. The role holder will drive quality oversight of contract manufacturers, packers, and suppliers, driving performance, compliance, and continuous improvement. Support and oversee new product introduction and equipment transfer into manufacturing environments through validation and verification projects. Monitor their performance through KPIs and coordinate the effective and timely resolution of any NC or CAPA.

The role works within an In-Vitro Diagnostic Quality Management System (QMS) and complies with ISO 13485, Council Directive 98/79/EC, In-Vitro Diagnostic Medical Device Regulation 2017/746, US FDA 21 CFR Part 820 and other worldwide regulatory and compliance standards.

We re looking for someone who has experience of working within a quality and compliance function, ideally within a medical device environment. Working knowledge of ISO 13485:2016 and US FDA 21 CFR Part 820.

Applicants must also have a passion for quality and be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills with the ability to build effective working relationships.

Working knowledge of EU IVD Directive 98/79/EC or EU MDD Directive 93/42/EEC, Medical Device Regulation 2017/745 or In Vitro Diagnostic Regulation 2017/746 and Medical Device Single Audit Program (MDSAP) is desirable along with experience of being an internal or external auditor as the role provides support in the fulfilment of external audits against the supplier audit plan.

As a Biomedical Engineering Specialist you will provide both hands-on biomedical equipment support and CMMS coordination.

There are about 500 machines at the site processing lots of R&D, Anatomic Pathology, Flow and Molecular samples. Experience with stainers and cover slippers and Roche Ultra s would be ideal.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform preventative maintenance, repairs, calibrations, and electrical safety checks on laboratory biomedical equipment according to established schedules and work orders
  • Inspect new laboratory equipment to ensure safe installation and operation and oversee Installation, Operation, and Performance Qualifications (IQ/OQ/PQ)
  • Troubleshoot and resolve equipment issues to minimize downtime and maintain high equipment availability
  • Support laboratory professionals in best equipment practices and provide operational guidance to improve biomedical equipment use
  • Maintain accurate documentation of all equipment, maintenance, repairs, and safety inspections
  • Maintain all aspects of the Qualer CMMS database for assigned site(s), ensuring accuracy of equipment records, maintenance schedules, and compliance documentation
  • Process work orders through the Qualer ticketing system and coordinate and track completion of scheduled and unscheduled maintenance activities
  • Coordinate third-party vendor services, including scheduling visits, obtaining quotes, processing purchase orders, and verifying completed work
  • Partner with Quality representatives to ensure ongoing 21 CFR compliance within Qualer

Required Experience:

  • BSc in Electronics, Biomedical Engineering, or related field
  • 2 or more years of experience in biomedical equipment maintenance within a hospital or lab required (working with R&D, Anatomic Pathology, Flow and Molecular samples)
  • Prior experience with CMMS systems (Qualer preferred) and vendor management
  • Ability to execute projects systematically and balance competing priorities across technical and administrative responsibilities
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and excellent organisation skills.
  • Comprehensive Excel and database management skills
  • Work independently with limited supervision
