Behaviour Support Assistant Jobs - St Helens

Location: St Helens, Merseyside
Salary: Competitive daily rates, dependent on experience
Contract: Long-term, fixed-term and ongoing opportunities
Start: Current and upcoming opportunities

Tradewind Recruitment is looking to recruit Behaviour Support Assistants, Behaviour Mentors and experienced education support professionals for opportunities across secondary schools in St Helens.

We work closely with partner secondary schools throughout the borough and are keen to hear from individuals who can provide consistent, positive and effective support to pupils who require additional help managing their behaviour, emotions and engagement with education.

Opportunities may include long-term Behaviour Support Assistant positions, fixed-term assignments and ongoing school-based support roles, depending on individual school requirements.

This advertisement is intended to recruit candidates for current and upcoming opportunities with our partner schools.

The Role

As a Behaviour Support Assistant, you will work alongside teaching staff, pastoral teams and SEND professionals to help pupils access education and develop positive relationships within school.

Depending on the school and individual position, responsibilities may include:

  • Providing one-to-one and small-group behaviour support
  • Supporting pupils with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs
  • Helping pupils regulate their emotions and manage challenging situations
  • Supporting pupils with SEND and additional learning needs
  • Implementing individual behaviour support strategies
  • Encouraging positive engagement with learning
  • Helping pupils develop confidence, resilience and independence
  • Working alongside classroom teachers and pastoral staff
  • Supporting pupils during transitions and difficult periods of the school day
  • Building positive, professional relationships with pupils
  • Promoting a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment

These roles require patience, consistency and the ability to remain calm when supporting pupils who may display challenging behaviour.

Who Are We Looking For?

We are particularly interested in candidates who have previous experience supporting children or young people with behavioural, emotional or additional needs.

Relevant backgrounds may include:

  • Behaviour Support Assistant
  • Behaviour Mentor
  • Teaching Assistant
  • SEN Teaching Assistant
  • Learning Support Assistant
  • Youth Worker
  • Residential Childcare Worker
  • Children's Support Worker
  • Pastoral Support Worker
  • Learning Mentor
  • Sports Coach with relevant behaviour-support experience

Experience gained outside a school setting may also be considered where candidates can demonstrate transferable skills and genuine experience supporting young people.

The Ideal Candidate

Successful applicants will ideally demonstrate:

  • Previous experience working with children or young people
  • Experience supporting challenging behaviour or additional needs
  • An understanding of SEND and SEMH
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • A calm, patient and consistent approach
  • The ability to establish clear boundaries
  • Confidence using positive behaviour management strategies
  • The ability to build trusting professional relationships
  • A commitment to safeguarding and pupil wellbeing
  • Reliability and professionalism

Experience working in a secondary school is desirable, but candidates from relevant youth support, care and mentoring backgrounds are also encouraged to apply.

Why Choose Behaviour Support Work?

Working as a Behaviour Support Assistant provides an opportunity to make a meaningful difference to pupils who may struggle with aspects of mainstream education.

By providing consistent support, positive relationships and appropriate boundaries, you can help pupils develop confidence, improve their engagement with learning and build important personal and social skills.

These opportunities may particularly appeal to individuals interested in careers involving SEND, pastoral support, youth work, psychology and education.

Why Work with Tradewind Recruitment?

You'll benefit from:

  • Competitive rates of pay
  • Weekly pay
  • Access to long-term and ongoing opportunities
  • Opportunities across St Helens secondary schools
  • A dedicated education consultant
  • Free CPD through The National College
