Intensive care as a pharmacy career: “Don’t hesitate” says Dr Cathrine McKenzie
- 17 Mar 2026
Dr Cathrine A McKenzie, BSc PhD FRPharmS, Senior Pharmacist in Critical Care, Clinical Academic Researcher and Reader in Critical Care Therapeutics, is clear in her advice to pharmacists considering a move into intensive care.
Asked whether critical care is an interesting and rewarding specialty, Dr McKenzie’s response is simple:
“Don’t hesitate! I’d say it’s a great specialty to go into.”
Working in intensive care places pharmacists at the centre of complex, fast-paced clinical decision-making. The role demands advanced therapeutic knowledge, close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams and the ability to manage medicines for some of the most acutely unwell patients in hospital. For those who thrive on challenge, variety and direct impact on patient outcomes, it offers a highly fulfilling career path.
