Advancing pharmacy worldwide: Catherine Duggan, on working for FIP
- 22 Apr 2026
Dr Catherine Duggan, Chief Executive of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) describes how FIP – a non-governmental, not-for-profit organisation - works to advance pharmacy worldwide. FIP represents over five million professionals across various sectors, including research, education, and clinical practice, across all six World Health Organization (WHO) regions. The benefits of membership include access to specialised networks, educational resources and international peer-reviewed journals.
Dr Duggan reflects on her own diverse career path, explaining how experiences in practice, policy and research prepared her to lead the federation. In her messages to the profession, Dr Duggan emphasises that pharmacists should be fully aware of their worth and the unique, transferable skills that allow them to move across sectors - from drug discovery to patient-facing roles. She specifically advises pharmacists not to wait for perfection to stand in the way of good, urging them to demonstrate their impact confidently to policymakers because, ultimately, "without pharmacy, we don't have healthcare"
