QC Laboratory Technician

The primary purpose of this role is to execute a broad range of quality testing and analytical procedures to assess, monitor, and report the quality performance of products produced within the Innovation Development Centre (IDC). The role supports product quality assurance through accurate testing, data analysis, and adherence to laboratory best practices and regulatory requirements.



Key Objectives and Expectations

  • Conduct quality assessments and analytical testing of products manufactured within the IDC.
  • Ensure testing activities are executed accurately, efficiently, and in accordance with approved Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Deliver reliable data and quality reports to support product development, manufacturing, and quality assurance activities.
  • Maintain high standards of laboratory practice, equipment performance, and compliance with health, safety, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by contributing to the development of laboratory procedures and testing methodologies.

This role has a direct impact on ensuring the quality, consistency, and compliance of products produced within the IDC. Through robust testing and data analysis, the position provides critical information that supports product development decisions, manufacturing performance, and overall product quality standards.

Key Accountabilities

  • Perform sample receipt, preparation, handling, and physical measurement activities to a high standard of accuracy and efficiency.
  • Manage and coordinate testing schedules in collaboration with planning and manufacturing teams to ensure timely delivery of results.
  • Calibrate, maintain, and operate laboratory equipment in accordance with SOPs, approved methods, and Best Laboratory Practice principles.
  • Apply analytical science principles and testing methodologies relevant to the characterisation and evaluation of tobacco, nicotine, and next-generation products.
  • Demonstrate technical proficiency in laboratory techniques used to assess and characterise tobacco products, Modern Oral products, Heated Products, and Vapour prototypes.
  • Analyse test data, identify trends, and support investigations into quality-related issues.
  • Apply scientific knowledge and practical experience to solve analytical and operational challenges effectively.
  • Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of laboratory procedures, methods, and quality systems.
  • Prepare and contribute to technical reports, presentations, and data summaries for stakeholders.
  • Maintain compliance with Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S), HMRC, and company policies and procedures.
  • Support a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement within the laboratory environment.


Experience, Skills and Knowledge

Essential Experience

  • Experience working within an industrial, quality, or analytical laboratory environment.
  • Proven experience following and executing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and laboratory methodologies.
  • Practical experience in sample preparation, measurement, testing, and analytical techniques.
  • Strong understanding of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) principles and laboratory quality standards.
  • Experience using preparative and instrumental techniques for the measurement and characterisation of material properties.


Technical, Functional and Behavioural Skills

  • Technical expertise in physical and/or analytical chemistry laboratory techniques and technologies, including:
    • Gas Chromatography with Flame Ionisation Detection (GC-FID)
    • Karl Fischer Titration
    • Texture Analysis
    • Imaging Analysis
  • Ability to calibrate, operate, and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify root causes and implement effective solutions.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure while maintaining accuracy, objectivity, and sound judgement.
  • Strong organisational and planning skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Ability to receive and act upon guidance and instruction from colleagues and external partners.
  • Demonstrated commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement.
  • Adaptable and collaborative approach to working within cross-functional teams.


Qualifications

Essential

  • Degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Physical Sciences, or a related scientific discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Demonstrated professional or academic achievement relevant to analytical science and laboratory operations.


Desirable

  • Experience within tobacco, nicotine, consumer products, pharmaceutical, FMCG, or regulated laboratory environments.
  • Knowledge of product characterisation techniques for Modern Oral, Heated Products, and Vapour products.
  • Experience contributing to method development, validation, or continuous improvement initiatives.

This is a contract initially expected until the end of 2026 but with a strong likelihood of extension

Fully on site role at the purposes built, state of the art R&D centre near Southampton (Monday to Friday)

Pay: 18.51 per hour
