Clinical Coder, Clevedon

Somerset, United Kingdom Monday-Friday role + NHS Pension + 5 weeks lea

Location: Clevedon, North Somerset

Salary:
£12.90 per hour (£26,832 FTE, based on a 40 hour week)

Hours: Full time, 40 hours per week Monday to Wednesday, 8.00am to 4.30pm Thursday and Friday, 10.00am to 6.30pm (30 minutes unpaid lunch each day)

About the role

We're looking for a Clinical Coder to join a busy, well-established coding team based at a GP surgery in Clevedon, part of a network of ten surgeries across North Somerset, Bristol and South Gloucestershire.

You'll be working alongside a team of nine coders who handle around 400 documents per day between them, everything from clinical letters and discharge summaries to test results. It's a role that suits someone who's organised, methodical and genuinely enjoys getting the detail right.

This isn't a role where you're making clinical decisions. You'll be matching correspondence and results to the correct codes using our established coding protocol, and anything that needs a clinician's judgement gets passed straight to the right person. What you do need is a sharp eye for detail and the patience to learn a system that takes time to master properly.

We know coding has a lot of nuance, which is exactly why we're introducing a buddy system for new starters. You'll have one experienced coder as your dedicated point of contact while you're learning, so you're not getting mixed messages from different people as you find your feet.

Training and support

We don't expect you to walk in and hit the ground running. Your first two weeks will cover induction, health and safety, and getting familiar with our systems. By the end of your first month, you'll be starting to work on documents yourself, building up gradually from there. Realistically, it takes around six months to feel fully confident in the role, and we build our support around that timeline, including regular quality checks in your first months to help you settle in with confidence rather than pressure.

If you've worked in a GP surgery, hospital, or other clinical administration setting before, whether as a receptionist, medical secretary, or in medical records, you'll likely find a lot of this familiar. If you haven't, that's fine too. Medical terminology training is provided, and what matters most is your attention to detail and your experience working in a role where accuracy is genuinely important.

What we're looking for

Essential:

  • GCSE English and Maths at Grade C or above, or equivalent experience
  • Experience working in an administration role
  • Accurate recording of data
  • Good working knowledge of Word, Excel, email and databases
  • Ability to prioritise tasks and manage competing deadlines
  • Tact and sensitivity when handling confidential information

Desirable:

  • Experience working within an administration role in the NHS
  • Familiarity with GP clinical systems such as EMIS
  • Understanding of medical terminology and basic anatomy and physiology

Where this can take you

This role sits within a genuine team structure, not a dead end. Coders who do well here have gone on to become coding leads, moved into other admin roles, progressed to Patient Services Manager, or even trained as a Healthcare Assistant. Where you go next is very much shaped by what you're interested in.

Next steps:
For further details on this exceptional role, please click the Apply Now button. If you can specify the best time to talk, please do; we will get in touch when it suits you best. You will then be contacted by one of our specialist consultants, who will provide you with further details about the role.

If you would like to talk ahead of sending us your CV, please give us a call on (phone number removed). Please note, any contact is in the strictest confidence and we will not send your details to any practice without your expressed consent to do so.

Is this role almost right for you, but not quite ticking all the boxes? If so, we have other roles available and can also work proactively to find you your perfect post.

We have been named as the Recruitment Firm of the year at the HealthInvestor Awards, Winners of the Professional Service Provider of the Year at the General Practice Awards, Winners of the Recruitment Award at the LaingBuisson Awards and named on the Recruiter Hot100 list, so in dealing with us you'll be in safe hands!

For every placement we make, Menlo Park plants two trees! We plant one on your behalf and the other on the surgery's behalf. By planting two trees we offset 0.6 tonnes of CO2, the equivalent of driving 1,466 miles in a standard car. We want to contribute towards helping save the planet!
