Plasma Researcher

Apply Now

Are you passionate about plasma physics and keen to apply your knowledge to advanced clean energy technology?

This is an opportunity to join a growing technology business where fundamental research, data analysis and practical testing directly influence the development of next-generation energy and carbon management systems.

As a Plasma Researcher, you will work alongside mechanical engineers, electrical engineers and R&D test specialists in a collaborative, technically challenging environment. Your findings will help shape test programmes, concept development and future product commercialisation.

What makes this role different

You will not be working solely in theoretical research.

Your work will connect published research, laboratory testing and engineering development, giving you the opportunity to see how scientific understanding translates into real-world technology.

You will join a multidisciplinary team that values curiosity, knowledge sharing and practical problem solving, with scope to develop your understanding of clean energy systems, testing methodologies and commercial R&D.

Key responsibilities

  • Research, review and summarise information from peer-reviewed journals
  • Analyse data generated through R&D testing and relate findings to known physical phenomena
  • Work closely with mechanical, electrical and data teams to support testing and product development
  • Develop test regimes that improve understanding of plasma behaviour and system performance
  • Produce clear calculations, technical reports and evidence-based recommendations
  • Support research into plasma, high-temperature pressure vessels, high-voltage equipment, gas management and carbon filtration
  • Share technical knowledge across UK and international research teams
  • Contribute to Factory Acceptance Testing, R&D programmes and product commercialisation activity
  • Work in line with health, safety, environmental and quality procedures
  • Protect confidential technical information and intellectual property

Skills and experience

You will need:

  • An MEng in Physics, Engineering or a closely related discipline
  • Demonstrable knowledge of plasma physics
  • Experience using MATLAB, Python or equivalent data analysis software
  • Experience working in a laboratory, operational test or technology development environment
  • The ability to interpret complex datasets and communicate findings clearly
  • Confidence working both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team
  • The ability to produce accurate technical reports, calculations and recommendations
  • A proactive and curious approach to technical problem solving

Experience using Splunk is beneficial but not essential, as training can be provided.

The ability to communicate in Bulgarian or Russian would also be useful due to international collaboration, but this is not a requirement.

Applications may be particularly relevant from Plasma Researchers, Plasma Physicists, Research Engineers or R&D Engineers with suitable plasma and data analysis capability.

Location and working pattern

This is a permanent, site-based role in Hull, working standard business hours.

Flexible working arrangements may be available where operational and testing requirements allow.

Salary and benefits

  • 38,603 to 43,724 depending on experience
  • Enhanced holiday allowance
  • Enhanced employer pension contributions
  • Share option scheme
  • Family-friendly policies
  • Flexible working arrangements
  • Free daily lunches
  • Professional development within a fast-moving R&D environment

Applicants must already hold the right to work in the UK.
